History
Construction begins
On November 19, 1894, the renowned builder and architect Kasimir Böhner began construction of the house at what is now Henkestraße 28. Shortly afterwards, the foundation stones for the hall and the music pavilion were laid.
Change of ownership and use
Between 1898 and 1923, the existing building was expanded with a props warehouse, and the Erlwein & Schultheiß export brewery became the new owner. After completion, the building served as the Erlangen Theatre, and soon the first restaurants moved in. During the First World War, the building was converted into a military hospital by the military authorities.
Company EOS
From 1923 up to and including 1945, the company EOS used the building for the storage and shipping of its products.
Seizure
After the end of the Second World War, the house was requisitioned by the US military occupation forces as a home for Erlangen’s youth. The Zeitner construction company then significantly advanced the construction of various commercial buildings in the following years. By 1954, further commercial properties had been built on Henkestraße.
theater
The Erlangen actors’ association moved into the existing building between 1954 and 1964 and used it again as a theatre.
Conversion to a hotel
In 1968, the entrepreneur Otto H. Eck acquired the property and converted it into a 37-room hotel with the Löwenbräukeller beer hall. The first renovations took place between 1982 and 1984, transforming the hotel into an international establishment. Since 1984, it has offered 159 rooms, several conference and event areas, and its own restaurant.
Acquisition & Modernization
On July 1, 2007, Hotel Bayerischer Hof | B&R Hotelmanagement GmbH & Co. KG took over the hotel and immediately began modernizing the entire accommodation and restaurant area, the rooms, the exterior facade, as well as redesigning the lobby and the outdoor facilities.
Change of operator
In September 2010, HV II Hotelverwaltung GmbH, which is part of the Steinkogler company, acquired the hotel.
Renovation
In the spring and summer of 2016, the lobby, the vaulted courtyard, and the terrace area were redesigned and renovated. In the same year, a plot of land was purchased for the hotel’s expansion.
Overall modernization concept
In 2017, planning began for a comprehensive modernization concept under the motto “Hotel of the Future.” Construction work commenced in July and August 2018. During this phase, a large portion of the rooms were completely modernized and equipped with state-of-the-art technology.
