The history of the “Colosseum” at Henkestrasse 28 and how the Hotel Bayerischer Hof became what it is today.

19 November 1894 on

Kasimir Böhner, the master builder and architect, constructed what is now the rear building at Henkestrasse 28, with a large hall and a music pavilion.

A supplies building was added and the Erlwein & Schultheiß export brewery took ownership, starting a hotel and restaurant business. During the war years the building was used as a hospital by the military authorities.

After the war, the cellars became known as the “bock cellars” because of the bock beer festivals held there, and the large garden by the music pavilion became a popular meeting-place.

The company EOS started a delivery business in the small hall.

1945–1953

The US occupying forces seized the building for use as a home for the young people of Erlangen.
After 1945 various business premises were run in Henkestrasse by the Zeitner brothers’ property company.

1954–1964
